Japanese Drama Remix Exchange

Sign-ups for this year's Japanese drama remix exchange will open in five days. Before that happens, though, I'd like to figure out what to do about participants' previous jdrama remixes. The options are: 1) not allow jdrama remixes to be remixed, 2) allow all jdrama remixes to be remixed, or 3) allow jdrama remixes to be remixed, with the caveat that any participants who have written a remix can designate that remix a "safe story" ineligible for future remixing.

Please fill out the poll if you have an opinion on this matter. The poll is open to both readers and writers, though I'm going to be weighting the opinions of the people who've written jdrama remixes more heavily, since they have more of a stake in the issue.

This poll is closed.

Should remixes be eligible for remixing this year?

Yes, someone wrote a remix of one of my Japanese drama stories, and I'd be interested to see that remix remixed.

Yes, I've written a Japanese drama remix, and I need all the qualifying stories I can get for this year's exchange.

Yes, remixes might be based on someone else's ideas, but the remix itself is the remixer's unique spin on a story.

Yes, some of the participants from last year wrote remixes that I'd love to be able to remix or to see someone else remix.

No, I've written a Japanese drama story that has been remixed, and I don't like the idea of someone remixing the remix of my original story.

No, I've written a Japanese drama remix, and I don't like the idea of someone remixing my remix.

No, I think it's rude to remix a remix when the original author only gave permission for her story ideas to be used once.

No, I don't think remixes are well suited for remixing.

I don't care.

I have an opinion that is not listed above, and I will tell you about it in the comments.

If remixes are eligible for remixing, should the people who remixed them be able to designate them as safe stories? (Note: Currently Jdrama Remix does not permit authors to designate any safe stories.)

Yes.

I'm not sure I understand the second question. You're saying that the person who wrote the remix, not the original story, would be able to designate their remix fic as a safe story? And is that whether or not you allow safe stories, or only if the rules are changed to include those?

That's right. Getting permission twice over for a single remix is too much of a hassle, especially if the original author doesn't participate in this year's exchange, so that I have to track down someone who may have changed email addresses or moved to a different journal or disappeared from the internet altogether. I'd rather just not allow remixes to be remixed than deal with that situation. (And if people seem strongly opposed to having remixes remixed based on their answers to the first question, then that's what'll happen.)

On the other hand, I can see how remixers whose remixes draw heavily on the original story (using the same dialogue, etc.) might feel cheated if that's the story of theirs that gets chosen for remixing--especially if it turns out that the second remixer is a huge fan of the original author, so that the first remixer feels more like a conduit than like an author in her own right. Getting just one set of permissions is doable, if people really want that option and if it helps prevent that sort of situation.

And is that whether or not you allow safe stories, or only if the rules are changed to include those?

If the rules are changed to allow safe stories, then only remixes would be allowed to qualify as safe stories.
